german hakeme chawan

german hakeme chawan

Ø 12cm

this chawan is made from a clay that I dig and refine
myself. the pit is located near my studio in Styria province.
it´s a very iron-rich clay and my grandmother´s brother is said
to have made bricks from the very same source!
the chawan of the german type has been covered with
porcelain slip, using a broad brush ("hake" in japanese).
hakeme means the structure or marks of the hake brush.
it´s the japanese expression for a decorating technique that
originates in Korea. clay and slip are covered with a clear
wood ash glaze and fired in oxidation
